Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9- by 13-inch baking dish.

In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, sugar, salt, and pepper; toss gently to combine.

Transfer to the prepared baking dish. Roast for 45 to 55 minutes, or until tomatoes have released their juices and are very fragrant.

Stir half of the basil into tomatoes and top with bread crumbs.

Return to the oven and roast for 15 to 20 minutes longer, or until bread crumbs are lightly toasted. Sprinkle with remaining basil and serve hot or at room temperature.
